*Since Mitsuki is 12 yrs old in the anime, this is Eichi's age supposed to be. Note, the 6 years age gap and he was born year 1984. Oh yeah, he died at the age of 16.

We only see Eichi through Mitsuki's memories of him and her imagination. The sad truth is Eichi's not a living anime character! (discovered in episode 43 in the anime) Like Mitsuki, Eichi's parents already passed away, he then lived with his grandfather who soon then died and he was left with no known relative that's why he stayed in an orphanage.
When he was small, Eichi hated the moon. He thought that when he cries, it's always there and wont live him alone - he's irritated that it's there. But then, when he met Mitsuki (who's name means full moon) he realized himself that the moon is there... and he learned to love the moon.
Eichi dreams to become an astronaut. He knows so many things about the stars, constellations and other heavenly bodies including the moon, and he tells it to Mitsuki. 
He was always with Mitsuki, spending time with her, telling her stories, seeing her cute smiles and footsteps made him happy. In fact everything about Mitsuki made him happy. He fell in love with her and confessed it to her.
The time came when Eichi and Mitsuki must separate because Eichi will be going to America with his new parents. He made a promise with Mitsuki that once they'll meet again, they would be more closer to their dreams.
In the anime, it was said that Eichi died with his parents due to a car accident two years ago (2000 - that is after two months of stay in America). But in the manga, he died because of a plane crash (the plane going to America).
